The first caves date back to the 2nd and 1st century BC and include Caves 9 and 10, both of which are chaityas (prayer halls). Caves 8, 12, 13 and 15A are monasteries. These are the Hinayana monuments. Caves 19 and 26 and Caves 1,2, 16 and 17 (viharas) are generally regarded as the Mahayana monuments.

The Mahajanaka mural in Cave I (Ajanta’s most magnificent cave) is the most detailed. Cave 10 (2 BC), a chaitya, is said to be the first cave discovered by the British; it has the earliest surviving Buddha mural in the complex. The famed mural of the Dying Princess can be seen in 5th century Cave 16. Cave 17 is notable for the sultry, dark-skinned princess putting on her make-up and admiring herself in a mirror, surrounded by her attendants. As a child, overnight trips with my family were usually spent in some cookie-cutter version of a Holiday Inn, Marriot, Best Western, etc. We stayed at the McDonalds and Burger King of the lodging industry in most cases. These little hotel adventures were always great fun, though not entirely separable from one another or especially memorable. However, on one special summer trip to Washington State, we ventured out of our comfort zone and stayed for two nights at an old farm complex converted to a cozy Victorian Bed and Breakfast.
Our first Bed and Breakfast experience, including the barn cats, hot (luke warm) tub, pancake breakfast, and our host (dubbed “the black widow,” thanks to her deceased farmer husband and poorly dyed hair), has been revisited warmly in many family strolls down memory lane. Even 15 years later, recalling both the good and the unexpected of that long ago visit always brings laughter. For my family, a single “Black Widow” was worth a dozen Holiday Inns.

We keep going back, year after year, mainly because of the climate but the island has a grip on us. Not only is there the superb beaches and warm seas, but the offering of natural beauty around every corner. Lanzarote isn’t just an island. It’s a way of life.

For such a popular island, Lanzarote remains unspoilt whilst at the same time managing to cater for the tourists that visit year in year out. Just off the coast of Africa, Lanzarote offers a year round warm climate and is a favourite for people seeking a get-a-way to Winter Sun.

Our favourite place is Playa Blanca, on the southern coast of the Island. Once a sleepy fishing village this town now boasts a sea lined walkway with an excellent choice of restaurants and bars, and yet it manages to hang on to its identity. It’s just a 30 minute trip from Arrecife Airport and yet far enough away to feel like a million miles away.

Playa Blanca offers a number of beautiful beaches in Playa Dorado (near the centre of the town) and Papagayo, which is a little more secluded and ideal for a quiet, relaxing break in the sun.

There is no shortage of water sports on the island with a number of diving schools, aquamarine trips, Jet Ski’s and Windsurfing on the north of the island.

The island also offers a number of natural attractions, the most popular being the Timanfaya National Park. This park was formed by a number of volcanic eruptions over the last 5000 years. These eruptions also created a number of ‘lava tunnels’, which are now open to the public and are a great experience. I personally recommend a visit to Cuerva de los Verdes and Los Jameos del Agua on the east side of the island.

For all you shop-a-holics there are great shops in Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote, and Puerto del Carmen which is the main tourist resort. There is also a large craft market every Sunday in Teguise, towards the north of the island which is well worth a visit. Read the rest of this entry »

Resorts of North Western France

The most popular northwestern resorts of France include the Caen region, which is lapped by the waters of the English Channel. This region holds an important place in French history – much of the area was part of the WW2 Allied landings and the area is dotted with historical landmarks relating to these events in the turbulent European military history. The beaches around the area of Point du Hoc are pretty poignant – some the D-Day landings took place here and so many young men died here fighting for the liberation of Europe during the Allied invasion of June 1944. Many of the beaches in this region such as Calvados represent a pilgrimage for people who lost loved ones in the conflict with Nazi Germany.

Arromanches is a pleasant seaside town which is a popular visiting place for those in interested in the Allied Landings at the Normandy region – this town was right at the heart of the Allied operation. The beaches at Omaha, Juno and Utah are a must to sample the terrain that greeted the landing of the Allied forces.

Some of the more popular beach resort towns include Saint Malo, Le Touquet, Trouville and Deauville. The white cliff faces and the strange rock formations around the Alabaster Coast are well worth checking out. Other villages included Etretat and Fécamp.

Resorts of Western France

The western area is dominated by the beautiful Brittany region. There is a wonderful combination of white sandy beaches and delightful rocky coves to explore. Brittany has a striking coastline that is woven by the Atlantic waves. There is a notable Celtic influence on this region. The beaches and coastlines make it a perfect area for those interested in surfing and deep sea diving!

Some of the most prominent costal resorts in Brittany include:

· The Emerald Coast (Cóte d’Emeraude), which is the area near Dinard to the north east
· La Cóte de Granit Rose to the north of the Cotes d’Armor

This summer is threatened by the Volcanic Ash and nobody knows what will or could happen. As we can see the volcano keeps erupting over and over again and experts predict that it won’t just stop suddenly. This could continue for months on end and could affect people traveling and going on their summer holidays abroad depending on when it all happens.

To make matters worse there is a slight risk that the near by volcano could also become active. Not only would this be a disaster for the travel industry but it could affect a lot of people.

But lets get things straight and not start panicking just yet. Most airlines are happy to refund any flights/holidays you have booked and you will not lose out on anything but traveling on dates that could be affected in the future. This is the only risk you have to take. To book a holiday and hope there won’t be any disruptions on those dates.

Apart from that everything is pretty smooth. Traveling to Europe and destinations such as Bulgaria, Spain, Greece and Cyprus will not be affected throughout summer we hope.

For those who are traveling now we advise that you contact your airlines before traveling to the Airports and find out the current situation to avoid disappointment.

Australia’s Gold Coast stretch of coastal towns starts north of Surfers Paradise and stretches south to the state border with New South Wales in the south. The northern end (especially Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach) is more commercialized, with plenty of action for backpackers. The southern end caters mainly to vacationing families. Away from the coast, the western side, called the “hinterland”, consists of mountain ranges covered with rainforest, much of it part of national parks.

The Gold Coast has a sub-tropical climate with plenty of sunshine year round, an average of 300 days a year! Summer temperatures range from 66 to 83 degrees Fahrenheit, and winter temperatures range from 48 to 69 degrees Fahrenheit, making this a great vacation destination! The most popular things to do in this area include: Beaches. There are 40km and well over 30 beaches to see and swim or surf in. Almost all are patrolled by volunteer and professional lifesavers. – Surfers Paradise has a long stretch of beach, with flags and patrols every few hundred meters along the beach. Sure to find a place for a swim, but the beach right outside of Cavill Ave is generally very busy and packed with tourists, just walk north or south along the beach to find a (slightly) less crowded alternative. – Broadbeach is about 3km south (40 minutes walk, 5 minute drive) of Surfers Paradise and will generally have the same surf conditions as Surfers Paradise. The upside, however, is that it’s not that far away and nowhere near as busy as Surfers. – North Burleigh is 4km down from Broadbeach (and over a small hill). It’s generally less popular than its bigger brother, Burleigh Heads, but a good place to go if there are winds blowing from the north as the hill provides a bit of protection. Although if there are northerly winds, swimming in the afternoon isn’t such a good idea as they’ll bring in the stingers. – Burleigh Heads is only 2km south of North Burleigh and a nice beach with a large park and a hill that is good for picnics. There are cafes surrounding the beach and the hill cover means that this beach is usually pretty nice when there are winds coming from the south (whereas others like Surfers will be blown out and horrible). Hinterland. Referred to as “the green behind the gold” (a reference to Australia’s national colors – green and gold), the Gold Coast Hinterland is home to three national parks, numerous mountains, creeks, waterfalls valleys, and natural rock formations. The area is mostly covered in sub-tropical rainforest, but sections have been cleared for dairy farm land and wineries. The Hinterland is best seen by car or on a bus tour. The parks include: Mt Tamborine, Springbrook, Numinbah Valley and Currumbin Valley. The Gold Coast region is big on theme parks. Investigate ticket discounts before you go, as multi-park passes, combined travel and entry, and multi-day passes can usually be obtained at a discount. – Sea World is the oldest and also one of the most established theme parks in Australia. It’s the closest to heart of the Gold Coast and will be interesting for those who have a liking for marine animals. Lots of shows and live acts, and you could easily spend a day here without going on any rides. It still does have some thrill rides, with the corkscrew roller coaster, and speed water slides. – Dreamworld is a traditional theme park with a popular tiger zoo and the home of the Australian Big Brother House. Bountiful in rides; thrilling and otherwise. Features a great little kids’ area with Wiggleworld. If you are in it for the rides, and not the theme, then this is the place to be. – Warner Bros. Movie World is a movie themed park with Warner Bros. themed rides and Looney Toons walking around all over the place. It is the most themed of the Gold Coast parks. Pretty crazy rides but not as extreme as some other parks. Depending on your blood pressure this may be a good thing. – Wet’n'Wild is a water theme park with a wide range of slides, a wave pool, ‘dive-in movies’ at night in the wave pool and even a river where you can just lie in a tube and float around and around! A definite must during the summer, though best left to a day that isn’t stupidly hot or the queues are just ridiculous. – Australian Outback Spectacular has a new Epic Outback Show, complete with stampeding cattle, wild horses and an Australian Dinner. – WhiteWater World is a newer water park next to Dreamworld, said to be just as good as Wet’n'Wild, if not better. – Read the rest of this entry »
